Alicia Poultney

I don't set out to produce art about one subject or another. If I have made an image, well that's how I wanted it to be, hopefully it can speak for itself and what ever it says to the viewer it will be the right message because there isn't a wrong or right message. Each person takes something a little different from the same image and i'm happy with that. I am influenced by what i see and its what drives my work most of the time. "Its a reaction to something you see, and there are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few that will catch your heart.... pursue those!"

The hand cut paper, which I love at the moment is where I find my calm. It is very relaxing for me to sit at hours at a time and hand cut paper into repeating patterns and motifs using a scalpel blade. Most people would find this very tedious and say I was crazy but its very enjoyable for me. I start one pattern with an idea how I think it will look at the end, but most times it has changed direction half way through cutting. Shadowing also plays a part how the pattern can look, it creates more pattern in shadow along side what has already been cut out.
